They expand rapidly, and their bases are protected so they can grab a lot of territory and defend it. In SMAC, I gravitated toward Chairman Yang and his Hive. Some suit your preferred style, and others don't. One of the cool things about playing these games is finding out which races or factions you like best. In MoM and AoW, each race has a unique set of units, but the sets are generally patterned the same way, probably for play balance. Same in MoO: the ships are alike (though graphic designs differ), but the races play differently. The factions in SMAC each seem very unique, and they play differently, even though their units are the same (unless you customize them). It seems to make the least difference in Civilization. The faction or race means more in some of those games than in others. Before AoW, I liked trying out the different races in Master of Orion and Master of Magic, and the different factions in Civilization and Alpha Centauri (SMAC). I like the distinct races in AoW-in previous versions of the game too, where there were more of them. Playing Age of Wonders III has got me thinking about how races or factions work in 4X strategy games, and how stories and characters mix with strategic and tactical wargaming.
